New Fruit Taste Test- Persimmon and Dragonfruit

With the assignment to try new fruit I really thought about what I wanted to look for. I have been eating fruit consistently throughout my entire life and actually prefer it as a snack over general snack foods. When deciding what I wanted to try, I walked through Publix and discovered my fruits of choice: persimmon and dragonfruit.

PERSIMMON:

There were two reasons I selected Persimmons. The first is that my roommates eat them pretty regularly so I've seen them often but never knew what it tasted like. The second reason is the color, it looked appealing honestly. After trying it, I'm conflicted. On one hand I enjoy the flavors the fruit has, it reminds me of a medley of fruits with a deeper taste. I am also a fan of the texture. I enjoy how it pulls apart in your mouth when you apply any pressure to it. What I am not a fan of is the feeling it leaves in your mouth after. The sensation is what I can only describe as it coats your mouth. Its a weird feeling, that is very hard to get rid of, but its not the worst. If it is a side-effect of eating persimmons than I would endure it and eat them again. One thing to note, my roommates didn't believe it was ripe enough, however, I ate the section that was the most ripe. I can see how the fruit would be more enjoyable when its more ripe, as the texture would improve and it would coat your mouth less, so I have put it back in my fridge to ripen and will try it again in a few days.

RATING: 7/10, will try again in a few days

DRAGONFRUIT:

I've always been interested in dragonfruits. Their color is enticing and their skin structure is interesting to observe with its exotic look. Admittedly, the only time I've ever had dragonfruit was in my Starbucks refreshers. When I saw that they were on sale I knew I had to try one. After trying it I am confused. To start, I expected it to be sweeter. To note, I ate a white dragon fruit while my roommates have told me that red dragonfruits are sweeter than white ones but I wasn't able to locate one unfortunately. The taste was very organic and overpowering at some points. It didn't have a distinct taste at all really. I didn't hate it but I didn't love it. I didn't expect the liquid in the fruit either, but I enjoyed it as it reminded me of watermelon. The seeds were cool but the texture was not what I would have thought. It was crunchy but gave as well. Overall I liked the dragonfruit but wished it were a bit sweeter. I put the other half in my fridge and will try it again with the persimmon in a few days.

RATING: 6/10, I want to try a red one and compare as I believe I'd enjoy it more

I am very happy I selected these two fruits. I didn't hate either of them and will try both again in a few days once they are more ripe. I enjoyed going out of my comfort zone and will continue to do so in the future when I see exotic or unusual fruits for sale.
